Description / Expertise: |
Havell made sketching tours of Wales early in his career, in 1802 and 1803. Many artists, both professional and amateur, made their way along the coaching road from London to Holyhead; this route took them along the famously picturesque Dee Valley via Llangollen, and past the riverside ruins of the Cistercian Abbey of Valle Crucis. Havell noted that 'the church & bridge - river & descending road with the surrounding Mountains all Combine to give a complete romantic landscape'. |
